Description

The project proposal is aimed at improving health care for internally displaced persons in Iraq. Main objective is to improve health situation of physically and mentally disabled children in Dohuk area focusing on their subsequent inclusion and the inclusion of their families. The project will create favorable conditions for providing quality physiotherapeutic care in response to the current refugee crisis in the country. The project is aimed at 70,000 inhabitants if Shariya city and further 4 refugee camps in its vicinity: Shariya, Kabarto 1, Kabarto 2 and Khanke. The project implementation will significantly improve access to physiatric care for physically and mentally disabled people in the area, increase inclusion of their families as well as increase personal and institutional capacity of local health care workers and special-needs educators. The project will provide direct benefits to 1,860 members of the local community, including 1,220 women and children. The following results are expected to be achieved: Result #1: Accessible physiotherapeutic care for physical and mentally disables children in the area. The project implementation will ensure the establishment and refurbishment of a physiotherapeutic center and the subsequent therapy for 700 physically and mentally disabled children, including 350 girls. Children´s motor skills will be significantly improved, which will enable smoother inclusion in the local community and improve their quality of life. 6 new physiotherapeutists will be, including at least 3 children, will be educated. In addition, 700 parents, including 600 women, will be provided with courses of “Vojto method”. This will enable parents to continue in provision of therapeutic care to their own children. Improved children motor skills will facilitate their inclusion as well as of their parents. Project implementation will also provide electricity and hot water – both from renewable sources (solar energy). Result #2: Raised awareness of parents with regards to the inclusion of physically and mentally disabled children. Project implementation will raise awareness of around 200 members of the local community regarding the inclusion of physically and mentally disabled children and their families. This consists of 50 families from support groups and the subsequent knowledge transfer to 150 of their relatives, including 100 women. This will ensure easier inclusion and improved quality of life for both parents and children. Project implementation will tackle stereotypes about physical disabilities and help remove social and cultural barriers. Result #3: Accessible special-needs education for physically and mentally disabled children. Project implementation will provide special-needs education for further 8 physically and mentally disabled children in the center (Light Learning Center). A special-needs teacher and 6 graduates of special pedagogy, including 3 women, will complete an internship. Education capacity of the center will thus increase by 80% and graduates will be provided with invaluable hands-on expertise. Result #4: Improved expertise of local health care personnel in physiatrics Three conferences are expected to take place during the project and will be focused on interdisciplinary approach to care of physically and mentally disabled children.
